Standing on the path attempting to determine which way my nose was going to take me I noticed an underlying forest melody I hadn't heard in a while. l listened a little more intently and...yes there it was. I wasn't mistaken, I could hear the frogs singing their annual song heralding the arrival of spring. I felt an unexplainable sense of relief knowing that winter was almost over.
Shaking off my pensive mood I look at Mom and give her a wag of my tail and take the trail to the right. I always enjoy taking this path as it goes deep into the forest and then simply stops. There's a small clearing on a wooded hill that looks down farther into the forest. As far as the eye can see it's nothing but rolling tree covered hills and valleys.
I being the fierce brave hunting dog that I am love all the scents I can follow as well as catching up on the goings on of old woodland furiends. My nose leads us on a rather round about path, but we made our way to the small clearing. Mom and I stop and take in all the beauty that is around us. The sunlight coming through the bare, naked trees painted the leaf covered ground in glowing shades of deep amber, beige, and chocolate brown. Mom and I are both quite taking in the beauty of our surroundings. We share a thought as Mom and I often do. Realizing there's no picture we could make that would capture the artistry of what we were seeing.
I once again get lost in the scents and trails of my forest fruiends. I find a new path the deer have made leading down to a spot at the creek. My nose takes me down to the creek bed where I realize Mr. Raccoon and Opossum have been looking for dinner.
As our hike continues I make my rounds to all my favorite spots. I stop by the abandoned fox den, just checking to see if Mr. Foxy's moved back. Nopes not yet. I stop by the turkey family's high rise, but they've moved out as well. The forest landlord must be going up on the rent as all my furiends have found new homes.
It's been a wonderful walk today. Mom and I both have enjoyed it as we've had the early spring storms that tend to happen here in our part of the south, making walks a rare occurrence the past few days. Mom gives me the "Look" that lets me know we need to start heading back towards home. I choose to take the trail home through the woods instead of down the hay field, as the March winds have started a bit early this year.
It's a quite walk home, Mom and I both lost in our thoughts. Me thinking of how lucky I am to live here in the country with a family that enjoys the outdoors as much as I do.
Once again this fierce brave hunting doggy has made her way through the thick and wild jungle on a tracking expedition, through dangerous enemy territory. It's time to get my snack, lie in the sun and take my much deserved nap.
Enjoy your adventures dear furiends, and enjoy your naps in the sunshine.
Love, Molly and my Mom
