Memorial Day Tales and Tails

Drat's Molly said crossly, as she unwads another crumpled Post It note.  "Now where is Hobo Hudsons, @ News and Tales Internet Tube Code? (click Hobo's Name to visit his blog)  I know I have it here somewhere, "  Dumping a collection of books and papers onto the floor, She muttered, "It's almost Memorial Day and I want to find out what this holiday is all about.  I know this is the first weekend of summer.  I know Mom and Dad will be cooking out on the grill and they'll watch fireworks, but I want to understand what it's all really about."  Letting out a long sigh, she looked down at a sunbeam lighting the path straight to (you guessed it) Hobo's Internet Tube address.  "Yippiee!", Molly said.  While Mom and Dad are at the garden shop I can scoot though the tubes to Hobo's House.   He can send me back in time so I can learn about Memorial Day!  (If anyone knows how to time travel it's Hobo Hudson.)

Jumping up in the desk chair Molly starts typing numbers into the computer keyboard.  The monitor began flashing giving Molly the all clear to jump through the monitor anddd fall on her face right in front of her legendary furiend Hobo.

Looking up from counting his biscuits (Hobo made a fortune in the Bone Market) and amassed a small fortune branching out in the fashion market with his own designer jean label.  Hobo chuckled and said, "Why Molly this is a pleasant surprise, what brings you by?"  Red faced, Molly straightened herself up, and shoved a lock of hair out of her eyes.

Replying Molly said, "Hobo, you are the wisest and most knowledgeable pup I know.  I need you to send me back in time through your Internet tubes.".  Looking at Molly Hobo rubs his chin, arches one brow and says, "Well Molly I was looking through my Internet tube codes I can I surely send you back in time.  Where would you like to go?"

Sitting down Molly said, "Hobo I want to go to the first Memorial Day.  I want to understand more about this holiday."  Looking at Molly Hobo nodded his head sagely saying, "Molly you're growing up young friend, and wanting to understand more about what's going on around you.  I'll send you back to the first Memorial Day, but you only have 1 hour in the time tube.  At the end of the hour you'll find yourself back safely in your pawrents home.

Now you understand this trip back in time is going to cost you some biscuits."  Molly pulled out her 5 doggy biscuits she'd saved for an emergency, she looked down at them, then looked at her furiend.  Saying,'Hobo, I have 5 biscuits.  Is that enough?"  More than enough Molly, stick a couple of those biscuits back in your pocket.  It's going to be a long trip back in time.  Step here by the computer.".  Hobo said.

Molly steps close to the computer.  Hobo looks though his Internet tube codes.  Rubbing his eyes glasses askew, he begins punching number keys on his computers keyboard.  The monitor begins flashing the lights dim , faintly as if in the distance Molly hears Hobo's voice saying, "Remember Molly you only have an hour".

Feeling almost drugged as if waking from a deep sleep Molly hears a band playing.  Looking up she can't believe her eyes.  She says, "It worked!!  Hobo's time tubes really work!!"  Eagerly making her way through the crowds Molly stops a few feet away from the stage.

Picking up a newspaper lying on the ground Molly looks at the date.  It was May 30, 1868.  The speaker was paying tribute to all the fallen soldiers who had given their lives for our freedom.  Looking at the miles of gravestones she saw what seemed like hundreds of women placing flowers on the graves.  With tears coming to her eyes, Molly said "I understand what Memorial Day is all about now".

"It's taking time to pay our respect and remember the price that was paid for my freedom.  It's taking into consideration that freedom has a price, and that people before and after I was born gave their lives that I might live in this great nation and enjoy the gift of freedom.

Listening to the words the speaker was saying, Molly's eyes brighten both with tears and understand.

(quote-1)
We are fighting for the life of the nation, that it may represent liberty on this continent;
Let us pause on the threshold of our thanksgiving to give a word to the martyrs that have fallen. The noblest courage, patience and endurance have been manifested. The young men of the country have fallen by thousands on the field.

But how bright a record is there for those who have died in the defense of their country. Those that die for a good cause are redeemed from death. They hover as a cloud of witnesses over the nation; they speak louder than we can speak to inspire the people with more earnest devotion and heroic patriotism.

He that is dead was your son; now he is the nation's; he was your brother; he is now the brother of every man that loves his country. He was yours -- he is ours.

Not one name shall be forgotten of all the generous best. Neither are they less honored who shall bear through life the marks of their battle service. The nation will honor them, so that strong men shall covet those who limp. Children shall flock with loving reverence to look upon those whose hands can no more work; whose feet can no more march except toward the common bourne. The nation will not forget those whose blood gave vital currents to her heart.  (end quote)

Just as Molly was beginning to clap her paws with the crowd things around her began to grow dim, as a bright light engulfed her.  Once again she felt that drugged sensation of waking up from a deep sleep.

She heard Tabby Cat saying, "Molly, Molly they're here, Mom and Dad are here.  You've got to act normal".  Hearing the keys in the back door Molly shook her head and said, I was there, I was really there.  Now I understand the true meaning of Memorial Day and the love and passion people have for this wonderful country we live in.

Running to the back door with her tail wagging and her biggest smile Molly did her typical I'm so glad your home dance.  Her pawrents never suspecting the adventure she and her dear furiend Hobo had been on, or that their sweet pup even had a clue what Memorial Day was.

Wishing you a Blessed and Safe Memorial Day,

Love, Molly and my Mom
