My story today also could have been about my annual vet trip. I love visiting my friend Barbara, the veterinary assist at my dogtors office and, the decision to change my bunny diet to bison.
No, today's story is going to be about a pup I've never met. He's a local celebrity here in Selma NC. That's right it's never been my pleasure to meet Chewy. I saw him on my local news today. I knew when I saw his big furry mug he'd be a great guy to meet.
Only Chewy knows how his life started and he's not saying, at least not to anyone who'll talk. We do know at some point in his life he fell upon hard times and like so many other pups ended up at his local pound. He didn't have very many days left on this earth. His surrounding furiends in kennels nearby kept telling him keep the faith Chewy. Don't give up. Some, talking among themselves saying, "I just don't know if the right one is going to come in time". As all pound pups know, sometimes, you don't find your perfect human in time.
Chewy was lying in his kennel one morning contemplating the mysteries of life. He looked up and noticed a man squatting down and actually looking at him. Chewy's ears perked up, his eyes brightened, he sat up looked at this man and gave him a tentative smile. The man started talking, Chewy listening ,came to a decision. He knew in his heart that this was his human and he wasn't going to let him get away. Chewy started talking and he and his human came to the same conclusion. They were meant to be together.
This my furiends is the true beginning of Chewy's story. Chewy and his Dad got home and as every Dad does when they finally get home took off his shoes. It had been a long time since Chewy had a family, he felt he needed to make himself at home and make up for lost time. As soon as Dad's shoes hit the floor Chewy grabbed one and started Chewing. (LOL yups that's how Chewy got his name)
Chewy managed in one lifetime to see the worst and the best life has to offer. I'm certain he's a very wise soul.
I Molly am blessed with a Mom that loves to feel the ground beneath her feet and to walk through woods and fields. This is the absolute family for me as I'm a fierce brave hunting doggy. Sometimes the cosmos fall into perfect alignment and we pups get the ideal human.
Chewy is blessed with a Dad who lives to have thunder in his ears, asphalt beneath his tires and the wind in his face. That's right pups and peeps, Chewy is a motorcycle ridin fool. He's been all over the US. He's been to California twice on the back of his Dad's bike. He has broken hearts and made friends all across the US.
I guess the big dog in the sky felt like Chewy had been chained up and behind bars long enough. He blessed him with a Dad that loved to travel far and wide and have a heart devoted enough to his pup to never leave Chewy behind. Yes Sometimes the cosmos fall into perfect alignment.
Chewy has spent his life on the back of the bike with his Dad and it's been heaven for them both. All things come to an end, be them perfect or not. Chewy is now thirteen and has been diagnosed with cancer. His Dad has said that Chewy is going to spend his last days (as long as his health allows )doing what they both have enjoyed all these years, riding their bike going where the road takes them.
Our prayer for you Chewy and Dad.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
and until we meet dear Chewy one day at Rainbow Bridge
may God hold you and your Dad in the palm of His hand.
And may you have many more days with the wind in your fur and the sun on your face.
We're so thankful to know your Dad stopped at your kennel and thought there's something about this dog.
Love, Molly and my Mom
